We woke up the next day to rain (hey, it's Seattle!), so started looking for indoor activities to fill part of the day. After poking around a bit we found the Museum of Flight near the Boeing plant, and figure that, hey, we both like planes, so that should fill a couple of hours. So we drove down there with the intent of hanging out until lunch, then going downtown to check out Seattle and go up the Space Needle (I'm a tourist, what do you want?). Boy, were we wrong! This was by far the most impressive collection of aircraft we had ever seen! It's built around the original Boeing factory (The Red Barn) and has literally dozens of aircraft on display inside and out. They also have the last Concorde to fly as well as the first Air Force One used by Eisenhower, Kennedy and Nixon, both of which you can go inside and tour! Needless to say, our 2 hour "filler" turned into an all day affair, and they literally locked the doors to the place as we walked out at closing time. This is another one of those "if you're any type of a gearhead go see it" type of places, but it's more than that. Beyond just the technical specs on all the planes, that have a lot of history on the men and teams that worked to create the machines and form the aviation industry at its infancy and up to current times. It's very informative and gives you much more depth and background on this than any other air museum I've visited. I think anyone who enjoys understanding the history of a field or industry would get a lot out of this, even of they weren't a big fan of planes. |
